The 100 Most Affordable Public and Private Nonprofit Colleges with Online Bachelor’s Degrees – 2018

Home / Education / The 100 Most Affordable Public and Private Nonprofit Colleges with Online Bachelor’s Degrees – 2018

This is another installment in our college information series. The following data tables show the 50 most affordable (by net price) public American colleges offering online bachelor’s degrees, and similarly for the 50 most affordable private, nonprofit colleges — for a total of 100 colleges.

Data used here comes from both the U.S. Department of Education’s “IPEDS Datacenter” and its NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) database (Academic Year 2016-17). The information is offered as is, and we utilized NCES college data as follows:

  • Pull data for any college/ university that is listed in NCES as offering distance programs at the bachelor’s level.
  • Remove institutions without regional accreditation.
  • Remove institutions without net price info.
  • Sort by increasing net price (average yearly cost for tuition, fees, books, room and board, etc., at a given institution).
  • Use the 50 most affordable entries (for each of public and private nonprofit colleges).

Notes:

  1. In-state tuition data is from AY 2013-14 through AY 2016-17, inclusive.
  2. Out-of-state tuition info is not listed.
  3. It is possible that some colleges listed here do not actually currently have any online bachelor’s degree programs. The reason for this might be any or all of:
    • the fact that NCES does not distinguish between “distance” and “online” programs;
    • that NCES includes online certificate programs in search results;
    • program/ curriculum flux — many colleges are still exploring online academic offerings, sometimes leading to dropping programs after reporting them to NCES.

    Note that while NCES counts both “online” and “distance” programs as the same, few schools offer distance programs exclusively.

  4. For the (academic) Programs column in the tables below, the legend is as follows: A=associate’s, B=bachelor’s, M=master’s, D=doctorate, C=certificate (any level) — for all programs offered at a given institution, whether online or on-campus.
  5. Missing graduation rate or retention rate info for an institution will each show as either “0%” or -1%”, but essentially both mean that the data for AY 2016-17 is unavailable in NCES.
  6. Some schools may not show all four years of in-state tuition cost, in which case data is for the most recent years.
  7. These data tables may be updated in the future, and will be marked as being so.
